Smart trucking: AI’s impact on fleet management

It will likely be years before convoys of self-driving trucks rule the highways, but that doesn’t mean that AI and IoT don’t already matter for fleet management.

Last year, the U.S. trucking industry brought in $676 billion in revenue. By contrast, the combined revenue of Apple, Google and Amazon last year was $442 billion. It’s no wonder that a growing number of tech firms are looking to enter the space, aiming to re-envision it with the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence to help bolster an industry battling a shortage of drivers. The stakes are significant: The American Trucking Associations estimated that the United States faced a shortfall of 48,000 drivers in 2015, projecting that number could surge to 175,000 by 2024. Meanwhile, trucks carry 65% of freight in North America, according to recent U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics figures.
